Saving wildlife, one animal at a time

Welcome to the Elephant Conservation Organization (ECO) new Mobile Vet Unit in Tanzania

Established in 2020, the Elephant Conservation Organization (ECO), has started an extremely important project of supporting wildlife vets in Tanzania. ECO is being incubated by the Mara Elephant Project (MEP), who have identified ECO as a key organization to support. ECO has partnered with Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority to make a meaningful impact in protecting wildlife and their habitats. ECO is about to start operations in September 2023 with the generous support from Lori Price and incubation funding for running costs from MEP. Follow our progress on instagram.

Meet Marc Goss, the visionary CEO and Co-Founder of MEP, who has successfully tackled poaching, reduced human-elephant conflict, and implemented innovative strategies across the Greater Mara Ecosystem. Building on his proven track record, Marc is now leading the charge to implement the mobile vet units at the Elephant Conservation Organization (ECO) in Tanzania.

THE URGENT NEED

Tanzania is home to a diverse array of wildlife, with 20% of Africa’s large mammal population found within its borders. However, the country faces a severe shortage of mobile veterinary units, hindering swift responses to wildlife in distress due to poaching attempts, conflict, and disease.

OUR OBJECTIVES

With your generous support, ECO will manage a dedicated veterinary team in collaboration with MEP and the Wildlife Conservation Initiative (WCI). Together, we have identified the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA) as the organization in most need of assistance, as it manages wildlife outside of protected areas in Tanzania.

The success of our mission will be measured by the number of wildlife treated and fully recovered. A second success indicator will be the ability to raise additional funding to support more veterinary units across Tanzania. Your support will be essential in achieving this goal.

Our Methodology

To ensure the success of our project, we have meticulously planned the following steps:

Governance

Operational Structure and Inception

Team Setup

Collaboration

ECO has a diverse board of directors, bringing together expertise from legal, conservation, tourism, and finance sectors. With the guidance and incubation support from MEP, we will establish a solid foundation for ECO’s operations.

ECO will deploy its vet team in the Loliondo Wildlife Management Area, addressing the areas of greatest need as identified by TAWA. We have developed comprehensive Standard Operating Procedures, obtained a letter of invitation from TAWA, and created a detailed budget and annual work plan.

The vet unit will consist of a TAWA vet, a senior vet from WCI, a driver, a vet assistant, and a cook. Equipped with a new double cab Landcruiser, dart gun, immobilization drugs, high-end camera, and a drone, the team will be well-prepared to respond to emergencies over a large area.

Working closely with the Wildlife Conservation Initiative (WCI), Dr. Robert Fyumagwa, an esteemed wildlife veterinarian, will provide mentorship and leadership to the team.
